Plymouth motorcyclist killed in accident

PLYMOUTH — A local man died Monday when he lost control of his motorcycle on a White Horse Road curve and was then struck by a 1995 Audi driven by Shirley Fitzpatrick of Newton.

The victim, Peter Leahy, 43, of 1 Mayflower St., Apt. 1, had fallen to the ground with the motorcycle when the oncoming car, operated by the woman struck him, Plymouth Fire Capt. Jack Furtado said.

The victim, who emergency personnel said was speeding, was still holding on to the motorcycle when he was struck, according to Furtado.

“The woman drove on to the sidewalk trying to avoid him, but wasn’t able to,” he added.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner.

The crash happened about 12:58 p.m. near 71 White Horse Road, a street that connects Route 3A, also known as State Road, with the northern end of White Horse Beach.

According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates that Leahy was heading west on White Horse Road and crossed the center line into the path of the eastbound vehicle.

Furtado said the operator of the Audi was shaken, but was not injured in the crash. Fitzpatrick was taken by paramedics to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, where she was treated and released.

The accident is under investigation.
